Just wanted to send alert to those in the Phoenix area. One of the right wing broadcasters here is Dallas is moving to KTAR in January. (we inherited him from Tennessee)
Darrell Ankarlo is a right wing tool. He is "in" with the repub in crowd often featuring Tony Snow and Glenn Beck as guests. He starts spouting the the talking points when most of us are still in bed. I could tell you what the repub response to any issue was going to before any pundits mouthed them on FOX.
He was the best alarm clock ever. Some outragous thing he was saying would always pull me out of my REM state and force me to get up and turn his bullshit off.
He crept up on us in Dallas. When he first arrived he was just another fluffy morning show. He identified himself with 40+ crowd dealing with family issues, schools and other things surburban commuters find of interest. Then after establishing himself as "one of them" his show took a sharp right turn as he became a cheerleader for everthing republican. By this time, he is able to mobilize his audience to action. For instance, he promoted those "war rallies" in the lead up to Iraq and staged a flag planting party.
His son was in Iraq (forced to join if you ask me). He pimped this kid out. He would read tearful letters on the air and have the kid phone in when possible. This all stopped when the son came home with a touch of PTSD.
He is also an evangelical. He has no problem expressing these views on the air.
One of his tricks here has been he says the most extreme things between 5-7. He dons his softer side for actual drive time. Six am is the time he will tell you how gays disgust him.
Read his books if you want an idea of what he is about.
This might be just a career move for Ankarlo. Or maybe Ariziona is getting a little too purple and the right wing machine is reassigning him. Either way you now have a snake in your midst.
The Dallas Observer had this to say:
Got some good news for local League of United Latin American Citizens president Jesse Diaz (and the rest of the human race) this morning: Darrell Ankarlo, morning-show host on KLIF-AM (570), is leaving our fair town for Phoenix. So said Gordon Keith this morning on KLIF's sister station KTCK-AM (1310), who just read an internal staff memo announcing that Ankarlo's moving to Arizona, after having brought "respectablity" to KLIF's A.M. hours. (No he didn't. C'mon. Just stop.)
Jesse Hyde profiled Ankarlo in the paper version of Unfair Park in May, when Ankarlo was on the air insisting that illegal immigrants from Mexico weren't coming here just for the jobs and a better life, but so they could colonize Texas and the entirety of the Southwest. "Their plans are to open up the floodgates, let in as many as you can so that one day they can reclaim a Texas or a New Mexico or a California," he told Jesse. To which Jesse Diaz responded about the talk-show host: "I think he's a very hateful person." What gave it away?
He won't even give his listeners details about the departure but rather is making them sign up for his newsletter.
